I may be a lone voice here, but I think Howard McNear did a darn fine job right through his final TAGS episode. It bothers me to hear so much talk of how sad and how poor his speech had become. Everything is relative, and maybe we should celebrate the fact that his professionalism and pride continued to motivate him to turn in a performance that was perfectly understandable to every viewer, rather than belaboring the physical damages his stroke had caused.
This is a subject of personal interest to me, as my father, who died 3 weeks
ago, had also suffered a series of debilitating strokes over the last three
years of his life. His speech, too, was dramatically impacted; but I rejoiced
in the fact that he & I could still share weekly phone calls despite my
sometimes struggling to understand what he was trying to say.
I think we TAGS loyalists should also just rejoice in the fact that we will
always have Howard McNear’s beautifully played Floyd Lawson to entertain us.
