confirmed

--- We apologize for cross posting ---

--- Please forward this call to anyone who might be interested ---

Dear Colleagues:

We would like to remind you of the Call for Papers to the International
Graduate Summer School "Beyond Knowledge Society: Scientific knowledge
production, consumption and transformation", to be held at the
Inter-University-Center in Dubrovnik, September 13th - 17th, 2010, that is open
until May 15th, 2010. We are pleased to announce that besides Armin Grunwald,
Vitaly Gorokhov, Imre Hronszky and Gerd Schienstock as course directors, Sabine
Maasen, Gotthard Bechmann, Andoni Ibarra and Nico Stehr confirmed their
attendance as lecturers.

Beyond Knowledge Society

The role of scientific knowledge in society has changed over the last decades.
The ideal of the pursuit of science as a self-evident value is no longer valid
for the entire science system. Furthermore, parts of the science system are
drawn into society's decision-making processes and are changed through this
encounter. Through new research programs, for example at the European level, or
new scientific organisations (such as the Helmholtz Association in Germany) new
modes of scientific knowledge production are institutionalized. With the
introduction of the concept of New Public Management into scientific
organisations and the shortening of (financial) resources available to
scientists, they find themselves in a changing environment where traditional
norms and values of knowledge production may no longer apply. In this
situation, science comes under pressure to legitimize its knowledge production
as relevant for society. The potentials of this new form of scientific
knowledge have to be analysed.

Can these developments lead to a state beyond the concepts of knowledge
society?

An analytical framework to discuss this thesis may be based on the distinction
between knowledge production, consumption and transformation.

The summer school's objective is to discuss the state of the knowledge society
along this analytical distinction. Some leading questions are:

 * How can the changed production, consumption or transformation of
(scientific) knowledge be conceptualised?

* What empirical findings support or contradict this thesis?

* What is beyond the concepts of knowledge society?

Discussions of PhD Projects as well as lectures from experienced scholars
working in the field of knowledge society, knowledge politics and Science
Studies build the core of the summer school. When accepted, PhD Students will
have the opportunity to present and discuss their work in an international
setting with experienced scientists and young scholars.

Submitting abstracts / Further information

We invite PhD students as well as young scientists to submit papers concerning
the summer school's topic. The papers can discuss empirical as well as
theoretical questions. We also welcome perspectives from varying disciplinary
perspectives. Applicants should submit an abstract of their paper containing an
outline of their doctoral thesis (no more than 800 words) until May 15th.

The Call for Paper as well as detailed information about the program, the
venue, travel expenses or scholarships can be found at the homepage:
