[Xastir] OT: Processors and Linux version

Since my desktop PC died the other day, I am wanting a new PC. The 
laptop is OK to get my mail and stuff, but not to good to use for 
everyday hamming computing.

My question is, does the Intel duo processor still use the i686 version 
of Linux or will I need to get the 64 bit version?
