Well I have managed to compile 1.9.4 on my Ubuntu 8.10 system.
Nearly fell at the last but remembered from fldigi testing to blow away
the old ./xastir folder. Was geting a map error and launch was stopping.
I am getting warnings like the one below. But it's not crashing the app
"
Warning:
    Name: create_appshell text_output
    Class: XmTextField
Character '\41' not supported in font. Discarded.
"
But I half remember reading something about that and will go look later
(but I off back to work for a wile in a few minutes so if some kind
person would like to point me in the right direction I wont complain ;-)

The HowTo for 6.10 /7.04 was followed and then the read me files form
the tarball were followed once it was opened.
