I took the reference to the 4.1 version of gcc out of the HowTo for Ubuntu 8.10. That was obviously a propagation from the older HowTo. I'm not an expert on compilers, but I don't think the versions matter here. As best as I can remember, I have always seen a fair amount of warnings during compilation of either xastir itself or the map tools regardless of what linux distribution or version I was using. I guess I just got used to it after a while. Anyway, I am glad to hear things are working.
