I'm happy to report a little closure on this thread. I am now receiving data in xastir using soundmodem. The issues were permissions for the xastir binary, audio levels, not having the "capture" device set to line-in and umuted, and also patience. Sometimes it's many minutes before I hear a transmission.
It may not be perfect but all the pieces are working! Oh and this is Fedora 10 running in a VMWare virtual machine on a Mac :p Thx everyone! Gary H.
