I meant put a sleep statement elsewhere for test purposes.

Anyway, other things I have briefly tried.

I currently use gzip 1.3.2, but also tried 1.2.4, with similar results. 
Once, and once only (first time I tried with 1.2.4), it did the whole 
folder correctly.  I thought, for a moment, I'd found the issue.

It also happens, apparently identically, if one copies, or moves emails
from the folder to the archive.
