Do you use the "-scale" option ? I ask that for, on my PIII 500, many
games are too slow to be playable if I use the "-scale 2" argument.
If I don't use the "-scale" option, xmame is very fast.

I had to add modelines for low resolutions (320x240, 320x256 and
400x300) in my XF86Config file to have a nice display without using the
"-scale" option.

Some emulators (xmame and uae at least) does not work properly with
XFree86 4. I think it's due to some changes in the DGA implementation
between the 2 versions. To correct the problem with xmame, I think you
need to apply Shyouzou Sugitani's DGA patch.

This patch is included in the unofficial 0.37b10 release made by Lawrence:
