Core patches.

O.K. here are the core patches just referred to - they are to memory.h and to
profiler.c - both are very simple. The profiler.c bug is that gcc 2.7 and
before cannot cope with the long longs properly - it causes a core dump
from the actiual compiler ! The problem with memory.h is the use
of __attribute__, so in that instance I simply revert to the non GNU
behaviour. Could people have a go with these to make sure that they
do not break anything else ?

...now to see about getting them into the core :-)
