Hmmmm.... - read errata to your driver, and check if any newer version
(I suppose you are using this one from nvidia) is available.
This sounds like general problem with one of the X's or driver's subsystem
ev. SDL.
I can see no reason in xmame sources, why xmame SDL driver should work at 16bpp
and not 32 bpp besides of your runtime output, which is quite correct.

Did you trie to use any other mode?
If not, trie to do so - if it helps, probably you should contact either SDL,
XFree or nvidia people (who, depends on deeper investigation).
