Are you sure that is the correct command?
My XMAME version (0.106) doesn't recognize it...do you know other method?

Rebuild your xmame like this:

make DISPLAY_METHOD=sdl

then

make install

I'm not sure if your xmame executable has sdl support.So you'd better
rebuild it.
