Since you made an SDL MAME it's probable the generated executable is not named xmame.x11, so the install failed. That exec should be named xmame.sdl IIRC. You can manually copy it to /usr/local/bin But at first didn't you want to have XMAME installed in your home? In that case you should not bother with make install.
