Hi Richard,

According to the section in the working draft of XUpdate about variables
(see http://www.xmldb.org/xupdate/xupdate-wd.html#N74cbee) they "can be an
object of any of the types that can be returned by expressions".
So it seems that this is a limitation of the implementation. It should be
corrected in the next release of XUpdate.
