I get photos from my Olympus 3030 and 3040 cameras into my 8100 with a floppy disk adapter. You put the camera's Smartmedia card into the FlashPath floppy adapter and put the adapter into the floppy disk drive, just as you would any floppy, and move it onto the Mac's hard drive from there.
No need to mess with any serial ports that way.
