out perform in what way?  that's a pretty vague request.  you can certainly use a *nix
variant to set it up as a router or firewall and/or network storage.  if you want to 
stuff
3 ethernet cards in it i suppose it could also be set up as a 4 port switch with lots 
of
buffering and managed routing if you wanted to.  what exactly are you wanting it to 
do? 
for the firewall thing a iici running openbsd and "pf" should work nicely on a cable 
modem
for instance.  i don't think openbsd supports the x100 series, but it may and i know 
some
other variants do (the 6100/7100/8100 have a unique architecture compared to other 
macs,
and the development work just hasn't been done)
