much thx for the ideas, see below on what did finally work

recap: system, 8100/80, NEWER G3(300mhz), 264M, jackhammer card, dual 9Gs,
8.6, FWB HDT 4.5, first refused to boot then hung while booting

- used spare 8100/100 to test different configurations
- reformatted drive with HDT 4.5 with drive connected to system board
- installed jackhammer card, CP, sys folder, other cards
- booted up fine using drive connected to jackhammer on 8100/100

- swapped cards and drives back into orig 8100/80
- system hung while booting
- narrowed offending EXT to MAXPower EXT, the NEWERTECH s/w to drive the G3
card (ARGHH)
- even tried a second 8100/80 mother board, swapped everything over, same
hang

- went back to the 8100/100, booted fine
- only drawback is th3 8100/100 has a slower system bus than the 8100/80 so
the G3 card only runs at 266 vs 300
- ARGHH !!! but still feels faster than the w/o the jackhammer in the
300Mhz

any ideas on what else to try to the the 8100/80 to work ?? might tear
things down again when i have a few hours to kill

jim

oh, and i also have a dead jackhammer card too
