hard drives not mounting on startup

[Vic 2]

I purchased 2 8.5 Gb HD's on ebay. They will not mount at startup I 
have tried them in a G3 300  a 7200/120 and a 7100 If I install a cd 
and start from that and run apples disk utility it finds it and fires 
it up or if i put it in my g3 300 fwb automatically runs a mounter and 
mounts it but only from the other installed drive not from it self 
anyone have any ideas?
