In my 8100, I have the standard CDROM and floppy drive arrangement, plus THREE hard drives. There are two bays intended for hard drives. One is big and the other is smaller. In the big bay, I have two low-profile (probably what you'd call the 1/3 height) SCSI drives. I "stacked" them using the four side screw holes on the drives. I used a Dremel tool to make four plastic "supports" to securely connect the two drives together with the bottom drive connected to the standard sled. The supports create about 0.25-0.30 inch of space between the drives, which appears to be enough for cooling. Interestingly, the internal SCSI ribbon cable for "Bus 0" has TWO closely spaced 50-pin connectors (at least in my system). Those two connectors are too close together for use with the two separate bays, but are perfectly spaced for use with a pair of stacked drives. I think maybe the original intent was an optional RAID system in that big bay for use with those two connectors. The 8100 used to be THE top-of-the-line model, after all. I don't know if that's the real story, but it works out very well with a pair of stacked drives AND to have those two hard drives on the internal (better isolated) SCSI bus. BTW - The idea to stack the drives came from this list (a long time ago). I'm sorry I don't have the name of the person who posted the idea. - Ken -- 1st-PowerMacs is sponsored by <http://lowendmac.com/> and...
