First, definitely remove the cache. I couldn't get 9.1 to work reliably on my 8100/80/Sonnet G3/HPV pass through either. As I remember, QuickTime seemed to be a likely cause of conflict. I would install 9.1 and everything would appear to be okay, and then after downloading the latest Quicktime strange things would happen. Desktop pictures would not appear unless they were saved as a different format. (I think you had to save them as jpegs.) Then the freezes would start. I finally stayed at 8.6 and it's been stable since.
