ok, i was wondering about this. i had i think 8.6 on one machine & 9.2 on the other, something... but when i installed quicktime 6, the screen took a VERY LONG time to redraw (watching in shock as my desktop icons one by one blip up individually on the screen). you should be able to get os9.1 going, but don't even try 9.0 or 9.2. & if you have quicktime 6, trash it & reinstall qt5; if that doesn't go so well, go with qt4 (which i think is pretty darn good anyway). & yeah, when i went to choose a picture for the desktop, it would show up in the pane, & then revert to a magenta background. it was there, but wasn't there, & the desktop didn't change. 8.6 isn't bad, but 9.1 is better (is that the consensus view?) so... do quicktime updates have hardware issues unrelated to software? or with some combinations of both? i've been gunshy about updating to qt6 since then--but do others use it on certain machines with no problems? ggsound -- 1st-PowerMacs is sponsored by <http://lowendmac.com/> and...
