By not upgraded, do you mean no extra memory either. If it's got less than 16M of RAM, I would venture to say that 7.5.3 is about the only OS to use. If it has 40M or more of RAM, and you want the extra features, I'd say go to 8.1, though it won't be as fast as 7.5.3 or 7.6.1.
