Sound volume

For some reason my 6100/60, 8.1, has decided that all sounds, except 
the start-up chime, are to be played at one low volume level. Alerts, 
CDs, on internal or external speakers, volume control has little 
effect and top volume is at about 20% of what it was. I'll toss prefs 
at the next restart but could there be another explanation? Thanks,
