I can't help on the data recovery, and it's a little late now, but I recommend a simple $40 UPS to be sure this doesn't happen again. I have most of my electronics hooked up to APC UPSs and I couldnt be happier. When there are brownouts/blackouts, they compensate, keeping everything safe and runs long enough for me to finish what I'm doing.
