Dave,

You have HFS confused with HFS+.  HFS+ was introduced with OS 8.1.  HFS took
the place of MFS back in 1986.

The original file system was MFS (Macintosh File System).  MFS was replaced
with HFS ( Hierarchical File System ) which was the file system use with OS
8.0, 7.61 and earlier back to System 3.0.  HFS was first introduced with the
Hard Disk 20 and Finder 5.0.  HFS was replaced with HFS+ ( Hierarchical File
System Plus ) which allows more efficient use of hard drive space.
