It is always possible that the ID selector switch has become disconnect inside the 
case.  The 6100 only has one SCSI bus and it is shared by all
internal and external devices therefore you cannot have duplicate IDs even if one is 
inside and the other is outside.  SCSI probe will tell you
the IDs of the internal HD and CD.  Is the external drive spinning up?
