Fellow 1st powermac listers,
I have a vague recollection of my problem having ben discussed in the past year, but it wasn't _my_ problem at the time so I didn't save the answer(s). I just bought a used SCSI Plextor PlxWriter 12/4/32 CD-RW drive, bare. Upon hooking it upt to the SCSI chain externally I found that it was recognized by SCSI probe once I worked out a unique SCSI ID for it and set the termination jumper appropriately. However, it would not function at its miniumu level as a simple CD-ROM drive until I hacked the Apple CD-ROM 5.4.2 driver as described in the online article Res Excellence web page. With the hack completed it works fine as a CD-ROM drive when in an external position on the SCSI chain.

The problem is this:

If I try to install the drive in the 6100's internal CD drive bay and put it on the internal SCSI ribbon cable, the computer won't boot. Still won't boot with extensions off. It gets about 1 cm of black into the Startup progress bar and hangs. That is just before the extensions start loading.

Is this an insoluble hardware conflict of some sort, or is another hack possible that could allow me to use the drive internally?

Then, I thought everything would revert to normal when I swapped the OEM CD-ROM back into the machine, but it then hung on startup as it did with the Plextor in there. At the moment I have the ribbon cable unplugged from the OEM CD-ROM so I could start the computer and write this e-mail.
