That's very strange, if the OEM CD-ROM drive has exactly the same settings
as before, why would it not work now?  Is it possible the ribbon cable was
damaged or partly dislodge at one of the other connection points?

You said you used a hacked CD-ROM driver when trying out the CDRW drive.
Did you put back an "unhacked" version when you reinstalled the OEM CD-ROM
drive?

Also as a test, maybe try putting a bootable CD-ROM (like a Mac OS install
disk) in the OEM drive and booting from the CD-ROM.
