Then, I thought everything would revert to normal when I swapped the OEM CD-ROM back into the machine, but it then hung on startup as it did with the Plextor in there. At the moment I have the ribbon cable unplugged from the OEM CD-ROM so I could start the computer and write this e-mail.

I Think it is possible you alterred the PRAM somehow. Ergo I think you should should zap PRAM (Command + Control + P + R) at restart.
