> Then, I thought everything would revert to normal when I
swapped the OEM CD-ROM back into the machine, but it then hung on
startup as it did with the Plextor in there. At the moment I have
the ribbon cable unplugged from the OEM CD-ROM so I could start the
 computer and write this e-mail.

That's very strange, if the OEM CD-ROM drive has exactly the same settings as before, why would it not work now? Is it possible the ribbon cable was damaged or partly dislodge at one of the other connection points?

That was strange, but I have ben experiencing strage behavior related to the SCSI chain lately. The problem with the OEM CD-ROM drive was solved by restarting the computer with an external SCSI HD connected. It has been fine since then.

You said you used a hacked CD-ROM driver when trying out the CDRW drive.
Did you put back an "unhacked" version when you reinstalled the OEM CD-ROM
drive?

It (the OEM CD-ROM) was working fine with the hacked driver before, and is once again, so, no, I didn't replace the original driver into the extensions folder.

Also as a test, maybe try putting a bootable CD-ROM (like a Mac OS install
disk) in the OEM drive and booting from the CD-ROM.

The real meat of my original question was why would a CD-RW drive sitting in an external position on the SCSI chain not work in the internal position?
I don't understand how the motherboard knows the difference. But, from other responses I gather that the PRAM "keeps track" of the hardware. If I were to put the CD-RW drive back into the internal position on the SCSI chain in place of the OEM CD-ROM drive, should I then zap the PRAM on start-up? Is that the standard procedure when replacing an internal SCSI component? I seem to remember having to do that to get the accelerator card to work...
Related question - Is there something special about the OEM CD-ROM that allows it to function as a start-up drick when the "C" key is pressed?
