I've had a Performa 6116 CD for about ten or so years and for the last five I
have had a Sonnet G3 in it along with two 128mbs sticks of ram running OS9.1
a Umax scanner an Iomega Jaz drive, Zip drive and a Yamaha CDRW without a
hitch. I tried all the peripherals with a PowerMac G3 and the CDRW locks up the
system. Go figure.

I notice you said you were using a CD-RW with your system. I recently posted a question about the use of CD-RW's with te very computer you have. Only difference between our systems is that I am using 8.1, and you are using 9.1.

Is your CD-RW mounted in the box on the internal SCSI cable, in place of the OEM CD-ROM or, is it being used as an external SCSI device?

My initial attempts to place a CD-RW "in the box" failed. The computer wouldn't boot. I haven't wanted to deal with the unkown amount of down-time that might be required to do a lot of experimentation to find a solution to this problem, so I am putting the CD-RW in an external SCSI box for now. It works fine outside the box. I don't understand how the Mac knows where it is on the SCSI chain like that.
