The Last version of AutoCAD that was Mac compatible was AutoCAD R12. I have
a copy of it. Of the non PC versions of R12, it is probably the best. It is
not Power Mac native and runs best on a pre-Power PC machine such as a IIci
or a Quadra 650. I was in the Mac and Mac software business at the time,
1993-'94, directing the efforts of a Macintosh reseller in Wichita.

AutoCAD decided to drop the Mac platform when the Power PC came out.
Because of that I sought a different package that would be the equal to
AutoCAD for the Mac. What I found, and still highly endorse, is Ashlar's
product line. You can find them on the web at:
http://www.ashlar.com/products/index.shtml. They have five primary
products, "Graphite," "Neon", "Argon", "Xenon", and "Cobalt". The price
range is from $595 to $3,995, which is very comparable to the Autodesk
product line.

The Ashlar line does everything that the Autodesk line does. What Ashlar's
product series does that Autodesk does not do is to maximize your output
and minimize the time it takes. Like most other products designed for the
Mac, Ashlar's offerings are sleek, fast and intuitive. And for the design
engineer or architect those are critical criteria.

So why do I want a copy of AutoCAD 2000? I have a Power Mac 9600 and an
Orange Micro card with a 233 MHz processor on it. It is always good to have
some familiarity with the competition.

P.S. I do not work for Ashlar. The statements are my own and reflect my own
opinions of the various products.
