I've never used OS X or Darwin, but I can try. This is what I
would do on one of my machines. There might be an easier way built into
OS X, but I wouldn't know.
What I would suggest is to see if you can use an Installation CD.
If you can boot off it, and get to a shell prompt, then perhaps we can get
somewhere. If not, a Darwin Install Disk downloaded from Apple might
work.
Print off, or copy down, the contents of the file /etc/fstab. It
should look something like this, It'll look abit different, cause this is
from NetBSD:

/dev/wd0a / ffs rw 1 1
/dev/wd0b none swap sw 0 0
/dev/wd0e /usr ffs rw 1 2

You should only need the first line. When you get to a command prompt
after booting from an Installtion CD, or similar, type in

mount /dev/wd0a /mnt

Replace /dev/wd0a with whatever your's has. That mounts your root drive
on /mnt, so your smb.conf should be under /mnt/etc/smb.conf Just uncomment
the right sections with vi and you should be all set.

You should also be able to change the root passwd. Type in

passwd -l /mnt/etc/master.passwd root

It should prompt you for a new password.

Also, check the contents of /etc/group Type in:

cat /mnt/etc/group | grep wheel

It should print out something like

wheel:0:*:root

If it looks like that, then edit the file, and erase the root part of it.
If there's something else after root (like ,dave or something like that)
then you're ok. If there's less (like just wheel:0:*:root), then you're
fine.

Reboot, and hopefully, everthing should be alright.

Please, be very, very, very, very careful. I don't think anything that
I've said is dangerous, but still be very, very, very, very careful.
I've been burnt before doing just what I thought to be simple things (I've
some horror stories to tell).

I hope this helps.
