Serial Local talk only. Bummer eh? Thank you Simon.
I presume, therefore, that it can do direct Serial or Localtalk?
If so panic not, there is hope yet. If you are running 10.2 or later you have a couple of options.
1. Buy an OS X USB to Serial adapter (Keyspan one seems to be the best) and hook it to your iBook. Then follow these instructions:
<http://my.vbe.com/~mbrought/serial_printing>
As a starter on this one, if you are running Panther GIMP-Print is included on Install Disk 2, so you only need to d/l the Serial Enabler.
2. Make sure you have GIMP-Print installed on your iBook. Instructions at the link above. Set it up on the 7100 with LocalTalk (there's actually no need to even install the driver), then network the 7100 to the iBook and set them up so they can talk by Appletalk (over ethernet obviously). Next, install the Apple LocalTalk Bridge control panel on the 7100 (go Google for it - it's readily available and is a free d/l) then reboot that machine. You should see the icon pop up at the bottom of the screen during boot.
Next bit is kinda complex, but it's fun when it works :-D.
Just to be sure you can't take the easy route, open the 'Printer Setup Utility' (10.3) or 'Print Center' (10.2) - either will be in /Application/Utilities. Select 'Add Printer' then 'Appletalk' from the drop down. In theory nothing should appear as this is supposedly for Ethernet Appletalk printers only. If you Laserwriter shows up all I can say is 'lucky'.
If it *doesn't* then still despair not. Open 'Terminal' (/Applications/Utilities) and you should get a command prompt. type 'atlookup'. This, after a long pause, will give you a list of everything that responds to Appletalk on the network. You printer should be in there somewhere. I did this with a Deskwriter and it looks something like this:
<short hex number> Deskwriter:Deskwriter
If you get something like 'Laserwriter:<name>' you are on a winner. If it doesn't appear (there should be at least 2 other entries for the two Macs) then check back that everything is working OK on the 7100, the printer is on and all the cables are in tact, then try again. If you still have no luck this is the time to despair!
If it DOES appear you could be on a winner. Open the Printer Setup Utility/Print Center. Hold OPTION and click 'Add Printer'. The first part is a menu that will ask you how it is connected. Select 'Appletalk Printer Access Protocol'. Punch in a name. Doesn't matter what. I used my printers make and model (don't use spaces, use underscores, or it all gets complicated in UNIX). The next bit asks for a 'URI'. This is like a web 'URL' but for hardware. It should look like:
pap://zone/Appletalk_Device_Name/protocol
for example my Deskwriter is:
pap://*/Deskwriter/Deskwriter
NOTE: the dividing ':' is *replaced by a '/'
If you don't manage to figure out the URI the first time don't worry, it took me about 4 attempts!
Once setup it should behave like any OS X printer, apart from the fact you will obviously have to have the 7100 on for it to work!
Good Luck :-D
