Tom, I am running almost the same configuration. I have a 7100/80 with Sonnet 266 card with a Thunder GX card. I am using 9.1. I had nothing go wrong with 8.6 as well. I haven't/didn't have any crashes in a very long time.
It could be your motherboard but even if it is your ram or your motherboard you can get replacements on the lem swap list pretty cheap. I got a new board for under $8. And ram was pretty cheap too. I test my ram the old fashioned way. I took them out and ran it to see which ones were the "bad" ones. I am running DSL on my mac right now. You could get a router and ethernet them together to the DSL modem. SBC DSL gives the ability to have two computers hooked to the same modem. One with ethernet and the other through USB. It sounds like that configuration would work for you. I hope this helps I don�t have any technical experience with testing ram so I can't answer that.
