Thanks! I'm heading out of town for a few days, but will post on the lem swap. I've always been very hesitant about pulling the innards of a computer completely out with no manual, but it is good to know that 7100 motherboards are available.

I guess there is not an easy way to get the power supply out. I always feel like a contortionist. Is there a special tool or some sort of spoon for pulling the power supply?

Thanks for the comments about the DSL.

Tom,

I am running almost the same configuration. I have a 7100/80 with Sonnet 266
card with a Thunder GX card. I am using 9.1. I had nothing go wrong with 8.6
as well. I haven't/didn't have any crashes in a very long time.

It could be your motherboard but even if it is your ram or your motherboard
you can get replacements on the lem swap list pretty cheap. I got a new
board for under $8. And ram was pretty cheap too. I test my ram the old
fashioned way. I took them out and ran it to see which ones were the "bad"
ones.

I am running DSL on my mac right now. You could get a router and ethernet
them together to the DSL modem. SBC DSL gives the ability to have two
computers hooked to the same modem. One with ethernet and the other through
USB. It sounds like that configuration would work for you.

I hope this helps I dont have any technical experience with testing ram so
I can't answer that.

Blessings,

Dave

I bought a 7100/66 in March of 1994, later upgraded with a Sonnet
Cresendo G3/266 card, 132 megs of RAM and an external 43 gig HD, a
small Radius video card, and a larger Radius video card (a Thunder
something), an Apple 14 inch screen and a used Dell 17 inch screen.

1. Have been using OS 8.1 for some time. What is the best OS for the
above configuration?

2. Also: I've been getting Error messages of type 1. Techtools says
it is likely RAM. What is the easiest way to test and see which RAM
pair is giving the offense.? How can I tell if it is the RAM on the
motherboard? The computer cranks up everytime but will freeze at odd
times. Have been afraid it is the end of the road for the 7100.

3. We later bought a B & W G3 400 and will soon get DSL. If the 7100
continues to be operational, can I hook them together with an ethernet
cable and use the 7100 for internet surfing as part of a two computer
LAN? How difficult is this to do?

For some unfathomable reason I am quite attached to the 7100 and hope
it will continue to live.

Thanks so much,
