Hello to everyone on the list...

Okay, I really DID it this time.
I just accidentally dropped my 19 GB Maxtor IDE hard drive containing
"mission critical" data onto the pavement as I was getting out of my car.

The hard drive contains the masters of my debut music CD (I'm a recording
artist) and I was going to connect it to my computer to back it up when I
got inside my apartment.

So there I was, locking my car, apartment key in hand...
.. when the HD slipped and hit the sidewalk.
(It is a bare drive; it's not in an external drive enclosure).

I might need a good data recovery firm pronto!

Although there is no visible damage to the drive, something inside it
must have broken, because now when it spins up, it emits a
loud repetitive clicking sound (mechanical noise) for about ten
seconds... then it gives up trying.

The spindle speed sounds correct, and the drive doesn't do the "spin up,
spin down" routine associated with spindle motor problems.
Perhaps I've damaged the stepping motor, or the arm, or the read head, or
the drive controller? Hopfully I haven't wrecked the media itself.

Has anyone on this list used a data recovery firm before, or can somebody
recommend a good one?

Professional data recovery would seem to be my only route, right?

Your suggestions would be most sincerely appreciated.
I'm in Digest Mode, so if replying to the list, please CC me as well.

Thank you VERY much in advance! I really hope someone can help.

All the best,
Greg
