What you have was called the "HDI-45" monitor port. It was an Apple innovation to have all sorts of connections happen through the monitor, but it never came to anything. An adapter was made by Apple to fit their normal monitors. They are usually available on ebay for about ten to twenty bucks. Just enter "HDI" into the search box.
