The control panel has a "use defaults" button which will set the disk
cache size to a value based on the total memory in the Mac. You may want
to increase what it suggests, but you don't want to use the miminum which
is what you get after a battery failure using System 8.1 or earlier. The
default button will also change your virtual memory setting, so note what
it is before pressing the button, and then restore it manually if you
need something different.
