i'd definitely cut a hole in the back and add another fan as well, make sure the power
supply fan has a proper vent, and add some air intake holes to allow air into the case for
the fans to exhaust.

I wouldn't have said the IIcx was exactly air-tight in any sense of the word! There is a line of vents along the lid, along the front panel and maybe also in the side? As I remember I originally used it stood up and it worked fine when the case was stood on its edge with the PSU at the top (Q700 styleeee). This adds more fuel to the heat argument as that would allow convection to move the heat towards the PSU and vent it that way. I suspect this is why the Q700 was designed to stand up vertically rather than be used Mac II style under a VDU...

and you definitely need the processor fan and heat sink.

Currently it has the old style Curly edged type 601 heatsink and no fan. I could add a little 486 CPU fan to that, what do you recommend? Blowing down onto the CPU?

also, on the 7100 i had the thermal grease had gotten pretty dry, you might also want to pop the
heat sink and apply new grease, in this case even the radio shack thermal grease is fine,
though arctic silver is better (but get the ceramic version so you don't have to worry
about shorts).

It was renewed with silicon grease (I didn't have any Arctic Silver at the time) about a year ago when i re-built it in the IIcx case, should be good for a few years...

I know i have a spare side-ducted fan that used to sit in a PCI slot in my PC before I rebuilt that in a new case with 2 extra rear fans. I could remove the PC slot bracket and try rigging that in one of the NuBus Slots perhaps?
