If it was that pronounced then you will be able to tell if you examine the logic board. Any blowouts on there will show as obvious burns.
I suspect however it's a cap that ha blown in the PSU unit. It's not uncommon on old (as in aged rather than old design, although that is also a factor) switch mode PSUs for the high voltage line side to blow a cap or something.
