Hi list,
what does it take to turn a 1st powermac (a 6100/60 for example) into a cable modem router? I know IPnetRouter will be suggested but is there anyone actually using it?
Yes I am using IPNR on a 7100/80 w/ os9.1 and (after working out a few hardware and software config issues with it), I am now quite happy with it. It is quite reliable-- I reboot my gateway once a month--but only because I think I should.
How do I go about the two ethernet cards necessary?
I chose a 7100 over a 6100 just so it is easier for adding the highly recommended, but not mandatory, ethernet card (to give you the 2d enet interface after the built-in enet ) At first I had put in a 2d enet card but they didn't play well together (or else the ipnr/os got confused)-- and the system would hangup or just stop working when i had 2 cards installed
I have an aaui-rj45 transciever and probably need a NuBus PDS adapter and a NuBus ethernet card? I know that cable modem must be plugged into one ethernet port (fixed IP) and that LAN must be on another (with DHCP services etc).
Any suggestions and/or recipes? I know that using a PCI powermac would be easier but I really like the low profile of the 6100.
*also you will need a hub or switch for your home LAN* -- on powerup if the nic detects no carrier signal it won't (activate) (I use a cheapo 3com 4 port hub @$9 on my LAN)
Wish I could help you setting up your 6100-- if you get those HW issues sorted out then I can help a bit with IPNR .
Over all I like the sustworks package alot -- I also recommend IPNet Tuner and also IPNetSentry and IPNetMonitor
regards
pat b
