I think I need two ethernet ports on the machine - one that will connect directly to the cable modem with a fixed ip and another that will be connected to a switch and feed the LAN with it. How do I get two ethernet ports on any machine that sports only one expansion slot? Of all pre-PCI machines only the IIvx has several NuBus slots.
Huh? There are lots and lots of pre-PCI machines with several NuBus slots. And beyond that, there's built-in Ethernet, so why do you need more than one ethernet port on a card? Just get a NuBus Ethernet card and plug it in to whatever NuBus slot you have available. After the built-in Ethernet, that's two ports. Configure your router application and you're set.
