This can be tricky !
The battery will 'auto discharge' with time
(some days to some weeks at the max.)

recharging can be dangerous if wrongly applied (battery can get or and or
explode !)

ascii art - set to courier font or similar fixed space font!

                                           >---(+)[battery](-)-----[0V -

[+ or PRAM batt on board]--|<|-----------/
                          =====

=====
===== this is thermal isolating tube

--|>|--- and --|<|--- are diodes.
(1N4148 or other SIGNAL diodes)
Mind the orientation of the diodes and the battery !

The resistor should be calculated for a LOW recharging current
Let say the battery has 500 mAh capacity ( = 0.5 Ah)
Recharging should be with a current less the the 1/10 of the 'capacity
value'
(here this is 500 / 10 = 50 mA)
1/10 is a real MAXIMUM
best try a lower value 1/20 - 1/100

let say we try with 1/50
so the charging current will be 500 / 50 = 10 mA

the voltage difference will be 5V - 3.6V = 1.4V
(we loose also some voltage through the diodes, but I prefer to play safe)
(this lost is small

the -[charging resistor]- = 1.4V / 10 mA = 1400 ohm
the closest standard value will be 1470 if I good remember

material list
2 signal diodes (like 1N4148)
1 resistor (see text for value)
thermo tube to isolate the diodes & resistor

soldering iron
solder
wire
someone to manipulate the soldering iron :)

I did not try that
It's a long time I did not play with electronics
I give no guarantee
I endorse no responsibility if that turns your Mac in a barbecue

Subject: [1st] 3.6V battery for PPC6100

Hello:

I will try to use the 3.6V
battery (Nickel Cadmium or NimH) designed for cordless
phone to my PPC 6100/66 as PRAM batt.
