robert: i have two working newertech G3 upgraded 8100s both with jackhammer cards running 8.6. i can tell you that most of this is trial and error. but once you get them working, they are rock solid.
1. 8100/100, newertech 300Mhz G3, jackhammer card, dual 17G 80 pin SCSI drives, 264M, 8.6 2. 8100/110, newertech 240Mhz G3, jackhammer card, dual 9G 50 pin SCSI drives, 200M+, 8.6 one gotcha i ran into, is that if your boot partition is larger that 2G, the 8100/80 won't boot from it. i have tried 4 different 8100/80 boards and various ROMs, all 8100/80s refuse to recognize the sys folder. the 8100/100 and 8100/110 mother boards/ROMs all boot fine from a larger that 2G partitions with a sys folder the jackhammer cards do make a big difference, pretty much doubled my disk throughput jim Message-Id: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> In-Reply-To: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Date: Mon, 3 May 2004 18:57:50 -0500 From: Jeff Walther <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Subject: [1st] Re: Hard drive in PM8100 >Date: Mon, 26 Apr 2004 17:39:02 -0400 >From: "Robert J. Do the MaxPower (Newer Tech) upgrades have the same problem? Has >anyone out there gotten a SCSI accelerator to work with a G3 upgrade in some >way? I have both ATTO cards and a JackHammer. When they first came out the reports were that the Sonnet upgrades did not work with the Nubus Jackhammer but that the NewerTech cards do. Word was that neither brand worked with the Silicon Express IV (Atto). I thought that Sonnet had fixed their problem with the JackHammer at some point, but perhaps not. Anyway, you'll find better compatibility with the NewerTech product. In general, you'll find better compatibility in all categories by avoiding the Sonnet products, with the main exception being that the G4/800 upgrade for PCI Macs works properly in Six PCI slot machines, which even XLR8 had trouble perfecting. Nevertheless, the G4/800 has other compatibility problems, such as not working with the Atto UL2D no way, no how. Note that this compatibility generalization goes all the way back to the days when Sonnet was Daystar's main competition. Jeff Walther -- 1st-PowerMacs is sponsored by <http://lowendmac.com/> and...
