Thanks for your suggestions.  The difficulty started the day after I made
several printouts successfully; I made no change in the computer or its
software before the trouble appeared.

I believe it must be a hardware or firmware fault in the printer.  The
cartridge-test procedure (which starts but fails to complete) can be done
with the printer completely disconnected from the computer; i.e., one is
not printing a file from the computer, so nothing about the computer's OS,
Chooser, printer driver, file characteristics, or networking can possibly
influence how the printer executes its test printout.  I do not use a
switchbox.
