Subject: [1st] SCSI acclerators on upgraded 7100; 64 MB SIMMs?

Greetings!

I have just upgraded my 7100 with a 400 mHz Sonnet Crescendo G3 card. The
manual says that the G3 upgrade is not compatible with SCSI acclerators such
as those made by ATTO and Adaptec.

Sonnet tech support confirms this, and told me that the old JackHammer cards
aren't compatible, either. They could not tell me what the cause or reason for
this problem may be.

Does anyone out there have any experiece with SCSI acclerators and these G3
upgrades? Do the MaxPower (Newer Tech) upgrades have the same problem? Has
anyone out there gotten a SCSI accelerator to work with a G3 upgrade in some
way? I have both ATTO cards and a JackHammer.

When they first came out the reports were that the Sonnet upgrades did not work with the Nubus Jackhammer but that the NewerTech cards do. Word was that neither brand worked with the Silicon Express IV (Atto).

I thought that Sonnet had fixed their problem with the JackHammer at some point, but perhaps not.

Anyway, you'll find better compatibility with the NewerTech product. In general, you'll find better compatibility in all categories by avoiding the Sonnet products, with the main exception being that the G4/800 upgrade for PCI Macs works properly in Six PCI slot machines, which even XLR8 had trouble perfecting. Nevertheless, the G4/800 has other compatibility problems, such as not working with the Atto UL2D no way, no how.

Note that this compatibility generalization goes all the way back to the days when Sonnet was Daystar's main competition.
