The LowEndMac site has a downloads section where a version of Hard Disk Tool Kit lives. The Apple formatter is not all-complete. A third-party formatter LIKE HDTK is a good answer, but can cause problems with using the computer after the new OS is loaded. The hard disk driver can conflict. Either the drive's non-Apple basis, or it's formatter/drivers can make a machine that's a real hair-puller with odd errors and crashes. It's rare, but it happens. I have two SCSI WIDE drives, both Seagate, I tried to use in my 8100 with a Jackhammer SCSI Card. Both produced errors crashiness and misreads that made me give up on loading OS9 onto the 8100 with a 266Mhz. daugtercard. Used in an AST IBM Clone PC, however, these drives both work perfectly.
