Hello

Why not run Linux on it and have complete LAMP solution (Linux, Apache,
Mysql,PHP). I've done it several times with 100% success and it's

AFAIK, the "AMP" (Apache, MySQL and PHP) have been ported to almost all
modern OSes, so if you want to stick with MacOS, you should be able to use
them. I have a server based on that trio running under a known OS whose name

Actually, no. MySQL is only available on Mac OS X as well as apache itself and PHP. See http://dev.mysql.com/downloads/mysql/3.23.html and http://www.php.net/downloads.php
What comes closest is WebTen ( http://www.tenon.com/webten ) but it costs money and still doesn't do PHP4.

Ok. Back on topic. The problem is that perhaps PHP and MySQL are a bit
"heavy" for a 601-class processor, but this problem applies to all ports
(Linux included). They just need a bit more horsepower. But if you don't need

Actually, no. I have run a 6100 with 72 MB of RAM and a fast hard disk on a website that did about 7000 hits per day with no problem whatsoever. The web site was completely PHP driven with lots of MySQL queries. The parallel machine (an Xserve 1 GHz G4) was indeed faster but on the client side one could hardly tell the difference (net congestion, dialups etc). Fact is that a query with text matching (LIKE) on 50.000 rows with each row having about 20-30 words (100k-150k words) takes only about 2 seconds to complete on a 6100. It is way faster on an Xserve (0.3 seconds) but hey - it's only a 1.5 second benefit on a rather large query. For serious webhosting (hundreds of hits per second) you of course need the best and fastest but for medium and low volume a 6100 can do just fine.

To satisfy my curiosity I did put a 266 MHz G3 upgrade in a 6100 to see if it will significantly increase mysql queries speed. 266/60=4.4 so I expected a fourfold increase but only got to a second per same query (less than double speed increase). So the CPU isn't the bottleneck here and was to about 1/3 the speed of an XServe G4 (with a fraction of price). I got much better overall speed increase by using a 100 mbit nubus ethernet card instead of G3 CPU. I think that with Linux, a 6100-class machine is indeed a viable option to run your web on.

Regards,
Boris
