If you are using the stock processor (no G3 upgrades), I would say that 
OS 9.x would be pretty sluggish, for very little functional gain. If I 
intended to use the machine on a regular basis, I would probably go with 
OS 8.1. If you intend on using a lot of 68k software, I would also get 
Speed Doubler 8.

I don't have much experience with 8.5 or 8.6, so perhaps one of these may 
be suited for this machine as well. Perhaps some other list member will 
explain to us the reason those OSs would be better or worse for this 
machine, or any other (hint, hint).

I would definately recommend against OS 7.6 or 8.0, as there seems to be 
too many bugs in those versions. I've never tried them since I was 
advised not to, and the upgrades from 7.6 to 7.6.1 and 8 to 8.1 are free 
from Apple, so I saw no reason to prove the advice wrong.
