hi

I use OS8.1 on my 6200 and it works fine, but I also know that OS8.6 is an amazing system, extremely stable as I have used it for 5 years without upgrading on my G3 iMac. I don't know how well it would work on a Performa though. It might be a bit slow although it would make the computer able to support a lot more applications

Hi,

I'm wondering if anyone can recommend the best OS for a 6100/60. The Apple
page says:

Mac OS Supported:
7.5
7.5.1
7.5.3
7.5.5
7.6.1
7.6
8.5
8.0
8.1
8.6
9

Anyone care to make any predictions as to whether or not OS 9 would run ok?

Any help appreciated.

Thanks,

If you are using the stock processor (no G3 upgrades), I would say that
OS 9.x would be pretty sluggish, for very little functional gain. If I
intended to use the machine on a regular basis, I would probably go with
OS 8.1. If you intend on using a lot of 68k software, I would also get
Speed Doubler 8.

I don't have much experience with 8.5 or 8.6, so perhaps one of these may
be suited for this machine as well. Perhaps some other list member will
explain to us the reason those OSs would be better or worse for this
machine, or any other (hint, hint).

I would definately recommend against OS 7.6 or 8.0, as there seems to be
too many bugs in those versions. I've never tried them since I was
advised not to, and the upgrades from 7.6 to 7.6.1 and 8 to 8.1 are free
from Apple, so I saw no reason to prove the advice wrong.

Hope some of this helps,

J White
